Here at Licenses, Etc., we wanted to share more details with you regarding new provisions that will assist U.S. military veterans applying for licensure. These provisions went into effect July 1, 2016. New provisions allow the veterans’ military service to be used toward the contractor’s licensure experience requirements.
Here are the regulations to receive credit for relevant military training and education.
- Up to three years of active duty service in the U.S. Armed Forces can be applied to the experience requirements of the license, regardless of duty or training.
- At least one additional year of active experience as a foreman in the trade, either civilian or military, is required to fulfill the experience requirement of Chapter 489.111(2)(c) of the regulations.
- Credit toward the requirements for licensure for military experience, training, and education received and completed during service in the U.S. Armed Forces, if it all is related to what is required for the licensure.
In addition to this, there will be some oversight. Beginning October 1, 2017, the Department, in conjunction with the Construction Industry Licensing Board, is directed to prepare and submit a report titled “Construction and Electrical Contracting Veteran Applicant Statistics” to the Governor, the President of the Senate, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives. This report must include:
- The number of applicants who identified themselves as veterans
- The number of veterans whose application for a license was approved
- The numbers of veterans whose license was denied and why
- Data on the application processing times for veterans
- Recommendations on ways to improve the department’s ability to meet the needs of veterans.
