POST-HURRICANE FLORIDA CONTRACTOR INFORMATION

Hurricane Hermine came and went, but we’re still in hurricane season here in Florida and it’s always important to be prepared and stay safe during a storm. Hopefully, Hermine didn’t do any damage to your home or business, but if it did we want to share a reminder from the Department of Business and professional Regulation (DBPR): Only hire state-licensed contractors to do work on your home and/or business.
At Licenses, Etc., we wanted to share some post-hurricane resources from the DBPR that may help you or someone you know during the recovery process.
• Business damage assessment survey: http://flvbeoc.org/index.php?action=bda
• Owners of small businesses with 2 to 100 employees affected by hurricane Hermine can apply for short-term loans of up to $25,000. For more information, visitwww.floridadisasterloan.org.
• Other resources can be found on the Florida Division of Emergency Management business webpage: http://www.floridadisaster.org/DEMbusiness.asp.

In the state of Florida, there are certain common storm-related services that do and do not require a state-issued license. This is not a comprehensive list. If you have any additional questions, contact the DBPR at (850)-487-1395. Check with local building departments to determine if there is any additional permitting and/or licensing requirements for your area.

The following work requires a state-issued license:
• Roof repairs
• New or replacement roof.
• Installing new windows.
• Plumbing repairs.
• Electric repairs or rewiring.

The following work does not require a state-issued license:
• Trimming or removing a fallen tree.
• Removing debris.
• Placing a tarp on a tree.

After Hermine hit, DBPR employees volunteers their time and energy to clean up debris around Tallahassee. The DBPR encourages people to lend a helping hand to those affected by Hurricane Hermine in your own community, or one nearby you.
If you want to be able to assist with construction of clean up from this past storm, or any storms in the future, you will need a Florida contractor’s license, and we at Licenses, Etc. can help.
