NASCLA – WHAT IS IT?

Are you looking to be licensed as a contractor in multiple states? If you are, you may want to look into taking the NASCLA accredited examination. NASCLA (The National Association of State Contractor Licensing Agencies) created the Commercial General Building Contractor exam in September of 2009. The exam was made to eliminate the need to take a trade exam each time you apply for a new license with a different state agency. Trade exams can be extremely redundant, which is why the NASCLA exam is so beneficial to contractors that aspire to be licensed in several states.

For participating states, the exam is either administered or accepted. A state that administers the NASCLA exam uses this as their trade exam. For instance, Georgia is one of the states that administers the NASCLA exam. This means that if you are applying for a new license in Georgia and take their trade exam, you have taken the NASCLA Commercial General Building Contractor exam. You could now apply for a license in another state that accepts this exam and this states trade portion would be waived.

A state that accepts the exam means that if you have taken and passed the exam (whether it was proctored through PSI or through a state that administers the exam), you would be able to apply to a participating state that accepts the NASCLA exam and your trade portion would be waived. Please note that the exam only waives the trade portion. Most states still require that you take a business & law exam.
