When it comes to construction jobs, time is money. Time is also important because deadlines are essential to hit, especially if you want your customers to refer you or call back on you again. With construction projects, there’s a good chance there will be bumps in the road. Something may be backordered. A person may have gotten injured. Something unexpected pops up. Whatever it is, construction projects can be complicated, especially if problems occur or if there’s a lot off people working on a project.
With all the complications and issues, how can a construction crew stay on time and budget? You’ve got to have the right plan in place, management skills, knowledge, and tools to keep a project on track.
- Set an exact timeline in the contract.
- Update everyone (clients and your higher ups) of progress/delays and anything else going on with the project every step of the way.
- Purchase construction software.
- Listen to data.
- Review the schedule often.
- Communicate non-stop with your employees, coworkers, clients, subcontractors, etc.
- Report the progress of your tasks in real-time – all employees on the job should do this.
- Keep updates short.
- Let everyone know what they need to be doing throughout the project.
- Check in and follow up with everyone to make sure they are doing what they are supposed to.
- Make sure your entire team is properly trained and up-to-date on the latest training techniques.
- Create and put in place a risk management plan.
- Make sure you’re hiring the right people for the job.
