A contractor and subcontractor (or independent contractor) are different.
A contractor is hired by a client to do a job/project. A contractor provides labor, services, and all equipment and tools. The contractor communicates with the client throughout the project’s duration.
A subcontractor is either a company or person/people hired to help a contractor complete a project. Subcontractors report to the contractor, not the client. The subcontractor does not manage the project.
A contractor has a Division 1 License, which could be a General, Building or Residential contractor’s license. These types of contractors are generally a single person or a company, and they do business by obtaining contracts and carrying them out. Contractors are responsible for hiring subcontractors within specific fields to get the jobs completed. Contractors oversee getting an inspector and insurance for the project. Contractors need to add clients and subcontractors to their insurance.
A subcontractor works for a contractor and is required to obtain a Division 2 License in their desired field, such as plumbing, HVAC, Electrical, etc. They are hired by general contractors to assist them in completing the contract given. Subcontractors are hired on a skill set basis and are hired to perform specific tasks as a part of the overall project.
During a project, the contractor acts as the manager of the project and the subcontractors is to complete the project within a certain time frame. Contractors and subcontractors work together to make sure the deadlines are met, and work is completed and up to code.
