New Statutes Regarding Upgrades

There is good news for those of you who wish to upgrade your license. According to a new statute that came into effect on 07/01/2020, there is no longer an expiration date of four-years on exams for contractors upgrading their license. It used to be that test scores expired at four years. Upgrade applications are no longer limited by that.

Upgrades are not for any of the construction licenses. No matter what you have heard, you cannot upgrade from a Builder to a Plumber for example. It is within a certain trade only. Division 1 Contractors can with their ranks (i.e. CRC to CBC or CGC and CBC to CGC), HVAC B can upgrade to A, and Certified Pool Contractors can go from servicing to residential or commercial building or residential building to commercial building.

Governor Desantis signed the Occupational Freedom and Opportunity Act into law on July 1st. This Act modifies many existing licensing requirements within the state, across a broad range of professions. The purpose of the act was to “remove unnecessary barriers for individuals pursuing their professional aspirations.”

The applications for upgrade still require that you have held that lower license for a certain time which acts as your experience to move to the next level. There are also background and credit checks that must be completed along with the 21 or 22 page application.
