How to Get an HVAC-A Contractor License in Florida 

The HVAC field is growing. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment rate is growing 21 percent from 2012 to 2022. This is faster than other occupations. This means around 55,900 jobs will be added to the HVAC world. 

There are many different contractor specialties and for this article we wanted to focus on the HVAC-A contractor license and how you can get it in the state of Florida.   

Right now, the construction industry is looking for skilled workers, so it’s a great time to enter this field. Contractors can start a career in contracting with little to no debt from their training/education and start out with good salaries.

What is a HVAC-A contractor? By definition, an HVAC-A contractor is “a contractor whose services are unlimited in the execution of contracts requiring the experience, knowledge, and skill to install, maintain, repair, fabricate, alter, extend, or design, if not prohibited by law, central air-conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and ventilating systems, including duct work in connection with a complete system if such duct work is performed by the contractor as necessary to complete an air-distribution system, boiler and unfired pressure vessel systems, and all appurtenances, apparatus, or equipment used in connection therewith. 

Interested? Here are the main requirements to getting your HVAC-A contractor’s license in Florida:   

  • Show 48 months on jobs with at least 12 months as a foreman. 

–or- 

  • A combination of college or military service and experience totaling at least 48 months with at least 12 of those months as a foreman. 

HVAC-A must show all areas of installation of: 

  • Systems in excess of 25 tons of cooling and 500,000 BTU heating capacity (one year of experience) Refrigeration Equipment 
  • Air Conditioning Equipment 
  • Heating Equipment 
  • Sheet Metal Ductwork 
  • Fabrication of Sheet Metal Ductwork 
  • Show 48 months on jobs with at least 12 months as a foreman. 

–or- 

  • A combination of college or military service and experience totaling at least 48 months with at least 12 of those months as a foreman.
