Should You Learn a New Skill?

In the construction industry, contractors have a lot of responsibilities and handle variety of tasks. However, in this industry, the more skills you have, the more valuable you become. Even if you are not a manager or owner, with more skills, you can find more work with more expertise in different types of contracting.

Before finding a new skill, think about what you like or are interested in. If there’s something you enjoy, purse that license or certification, whether it’s for plumbing or carpentry work. If you find a skill you want to add, the time and effort will be worth it in the end as it will be another source of income for you as you begin to take on more work and projects.

You may also consider choosing a new skill based on current trends/popular things. For example, if more and more people are getting pools, spas, and outdoor living spaces built, you may want to pursue a path in learning how to become that type of skilled contractor.

The more skills you have, the less time you will have be out of work. In the industry, there is ebbs and flows of what specialties are needed more than others. So, if you have a variety of skills, if people no longer are looking for pools, you will be fine because you know how to install roofs and lights, etc.

More skills can make you more marketable and attractive to clients and employers. You will be less likely to stay out of work when times get slower.
