As a contractor, you want to take on a lot of jobs to have a steady stream of income. You want to build up your client base and have projects planned out for the foreseeable future. However, sometimes you may get too many clients looking for your help or you may be asked about work that you don’t really want to do.
Whether you’re in a good place financially or you don’t want to overextend yourself, you can turn down work. There are a few ways you can turn down work politely, so you don’t offend anyone or hurt a future client.
- It’s OK to say “no.” If the job isn’t something you enjoy, doesn’t fit your skills or it makes you uncomfortable, it might be best for you to pass on the job. After you pass on the job, you could recommend someone else to them who could take it on. Just let them know you, unfortunately, cannot take them on as a client at this time. It’s much better for all parties if you are honest upfront and do not string them along.
- Raise your prices. Sometimes, you might be getting so much business, especially business that you don’t want, because of how low your prices are compared to other contractors. For those clients who are more worth your time, they will be willing to pay more.
- Create a long-term schedule. If you are too busy right now for a client, maybe in two months you have a big opening for them. If you can better schedule and spread-out clients, then you may not feel overwhelmed, do not have to say “no,” and are creating a bigger client base. Many customers are willing to wait for your skills.
It is always important to choose the work that helps you grow personally and financially in your career. You want to be happy and not miserable. Don’t overload yourself. Try your best to spread out your clients so you can have a manageable and enjoyable steady flow of work.
