General Contractor Vs. Specialty Contractor

If you want to be a contractor in the construction industry, you have many options. You can either be a general contractor or a specialty contractor. What is the difference between the two types of contractors?

A general contractor will oversee a project. You can either be a general engineering contractor (Class A license) who can do a lot of niches and industries with their skills or a general building contractor (Class B license) who has more focused niches or specialties.  Class A general contractors are usually in charge of bigger projects.

A specialty contractor has a Class C license that shows he/she has a specific set of skills in one specialty/niche. They are often used as a subcontractor or hired for specific projects. They are experts in their specialty and their work is more restricted based on their license compared to a general contractor. Some specialties include: electrical, plumbing, building, pool, mechanical, HVAC, solar, sheet metal, solar, marine, drywall, irrigation, marine, pollutant storage, and more.

General and specialty contractors work together to get a project done.

If you like bigger jobs, like to manage, delegate, sign off on projects, and be in charge, you may prefer being a general contractor. If you prefer to focus only on specific parts of a project, a specialty contractor job is better for you. Neither one is better than the other – they are just different parts of the construction industry.
