Social Media Dos and Dont’s as a Contractor

These days, a business pretty much needs a social media presence to be successful. However, you must use social media correctly if you want your business to grow and flourish.

Here are some dos and don’ts of social media to remember as a contractor to help your business succeed.

  • Use your social media to market your business, not your personal life. You want to take pictures and videos of your work, tools, methods, testimonials, and more. You can talk to clients and other contractors on the platforms. You can update people on your hours, services, and more. Your posts can be views by hundreds or even thousands of people. However, if you share certain personal things, you may turn off or bother people. Your political views or nights on the town may be best left private. Create yourself a personal page where only close friends and family can view your posts. If someone doesn’t like a post of yours, they may tell others to stay clear of you, as well. On your business page, it’s in your best interest to stick to business.
  • Share pictures and videos of your work, especially your most recent work, not photos of your night on the town. Share before and after photos. Your business page will not look as professional and will be hard to navigate if potential clients must scroll through personal photos in order to see examples of your work. In your photos and videos, detail the project, what techniques or materials you used, etc. If you start to share photos or video not related to your business, people may question your work or integrity as a business owner. Use your best judgment when posting videos and photos to your business page.
  • Share testimonials by clients, but do not vent to your social media followers about your clients. Testimonials can help get you more business as people trust other people. Word of mouth is a powerful marketing tool. However, if you have a difficult client, do not bash them on social media. If you complain about your clients, potential clients may worry that you will complain about them publicly, as well. Plus, it will likely just come back to bite you.
  • Share opinions on topics in your industry but not on certain topics like politics or religion, which can turn people off.

Social media can be your best friend or your worst enemy when it comes to marketing your business, as people can turn on you if they do not like something you share or say; however, stick to what you know about your business and industry and you will succeed on social media.
