What Are Construction Defects?

No one wants a construction defect to occur. Construction defects are a headache for builders/contractors and clients, especially if the issue gets brought to a construction defect trial.  

It’s a builder or developers or contractor’s job to be on the lookout for construction defects; however, sometimes, defects get overlooked. Real problems arise when defects appear, and no one takes responsibility for them. We wanted to share some of the most common places that construction defects that are found. Construction defects can cause major damage to a property and lessen the value of it.  

• Windows- Construction defects in windows include leaks from poor installation or the window was defective.  

• Roofs – Construction defects in roofs have to do with the installation of component parts that can cause leaks or if there is an improper slope on a flat roof.  
• Stucco – Construction defects in stucco result in cracks caused by structural deficiencies, soil sediment, or stucco shrinkage.  
• Drywall – Construction defects in drywall are caused by structural deficiencies or poor installation.  
• Concrete – Construction defects in concrete are caused by cracks due to excess water damage or an improper slope.  
• Balconies – Construction defects on balconies/roofs are usually caused by installation issues from flashing that is lapped wrong, which causes leaks. 

• Showers – Construction defects in showers usually occur from poor or improper flashing, lack of caulking, waterproofing or tile work, which can cause leaking.
