The National Association of State Contractors Licensing Agencies (NASCLA) has created a nationally-recognized accredited trade examination for electricians.
Through administering state agencies, NASCLA will offer three different open-book electrical trade examinations through the NASCLA Accredited Electrical Examination Program:
- Electrical Contractors (Master/Unlimited Electricians)
- Journeyman Electricians
- Residential Electrical Contractors (Residential Electricians)
To make this exam happen, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) around the United States worked with NASCLA to develop the job analyses for each examination to represent the work performed in jurisdictions throughout the United States.
NASCLA conducted national surveys of electricians in each category to aid the SMEs in the creation of each job analysis. This was created under the highest electrical and psychometric standards.
The NASCLA Accredited Electrical Examination Program intends to improve the overall quality and validity of trade-licensing exams for electricians. Participating states will provide contractor mobility by allowing electricians the opportunity to cross state borders without having to take multiple electrical examinations.
This program was ready for states to adopt in August of 2018.
For this exam, candidates will only be able to take an examination within the program through an administering regulatory agency. It is not available nationally through independent testing providers. As a candidate, you must apply with the administering regulatory agency to be approved to take the exam through the program.
Once a candidate takes the exam and passes, his/her information is stored in the NASCLA National Examination Database (NED).
As of now, the only participating regulatory agency is the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors 2525 Quail Drive, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Phone: (225) 765-2301. Just like the NASCLA Accredited Examination for Commercial General Building Contractors, more states should be adopting this exam throughout the year.
