Safety Tips for Contractors

It should come to no surprise that contractors in the construction industry face more dangerous environments and working areas than other professions. In fact, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, (OSHA), the fatal injury rate for the construction industry is higher than the national average for other industries.
Here are some safety precautions contractors should take on the job to prevent injuries or fatal accidents:

  • Wear safety gear – If you’re lifting heavy objects, wear a back brace. If you’re working with your hands a lot, wear heavy-duty gloves.Wear gloves and goggles anytime you are around dangerous tools or debris. If you’re working up high, get strapped into a harness. If working on a roof, wear non-skid rubber footwear. When around a lot of dust, toxins, or chemicals, wear a breathing mask or respirator.
  • Use caution with equipment – Make sure your shoes or gloves are not slippery when operating or using equipment. Use step ladders when climbing onto equipment. Ask for help when needed. Take your time using the equipment. Avoid jumping and hopping down.
  • Use caution when loading and unloading – Keep all ramps dry, straight and clear. Get help when loading or unloading. Always double check to make sure things are secured properly.
  • Avoid crowding – Try not to overlap crews so crowding doesn’t cause an accident or injury.
  • Pay attention to wear you’re walking.
  • Turn off all tools and equipment when walking away/done.
  • Make your presence known to others.
  • Follow all site safety rules.
  • Don’t take on more than your body can handle.
  • There is no denying that the construction industry puts people at a higher risk of injury, but you can lower this risk by actively following safety rules.Want to be a contractor?
