Florida Continues to Crack Down on Unlicensed Contractors

Working as an unlicensed contractor is illegal in Florida. In fact, it’s a criminal offense. It’s not worth risking your career, finances, or jail time over, especially since our team at Licenses, Etc. can help you get your license fast and easy.

The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) has a hotline and a mobile app that allows people to report unlicensed activity on the go. This makes it very easy for people to report unlicensed work and workers. It’s not easy to work unlicensed anymore. Don’t get caught, get licensed!

The DBPR also has a Division of Regulation hosts events to spread awareness to perform stings and sweeps in the communities to stop and educate on unlicensed activity.

  •  In 2016, the organization has conducted more than 921 unlicensed activity outreach events, 49 stings, and 828 sweeps.
  • In 2017, five unlicensed contractors were caught in a sting operation and brought to Flagler County jail.
  • This past February in Hillsborough County, 118 unlicensed contractors were arrested after a nine-month-long construction fraud sting for performing $540,000 worth of work illegally.
  • In September, eight unlicensed and uninsured contractors were arrested in Volusia County. Deputies captured the arrests on a body camera. They set up a sting house in Deltona and another in DeLand to lure unlicensed contractors in.

And, there’s far more arrests than those listed above! As you can see, Florida takes unlicensed contractor work seriously.

If you want to work as a contractor, it is in your best interest to get a Florida contractor’s license. If you don’t, not only will you be eligible for fewer jobs, but you run the risk of getting caught working unlicensed and being charged with a misdemeanor or felony.

Besides having an offense against you on your record, you can also be subject to court-ordered monetary restitution.

Don’t risk your future or career by practicing unlicensed activity illegally. If you are worried about the contractor licensing process, don’t be. We can help you every step of the way with the application process. We can make it easy and achievable for you, so you can have a successful career as a contractor instead of having a felony against you.
