If you’re interested in becoming a contractor, now is the time! Not only is it a rewarding career that pays well, but there is a labor shortage. So if you get the proper training and certifications, then you are likely to find a job easily, as there are so many positions waiting to be filled. The biggest shortage is in the construction sector, and since there’s so much construction work now… there’s a bit of a problem across the country.
Back around 2008-2010, the recession hit, and many workers could not find jobs, so many workers left the construction industry and never came back when the jobs started to grow. About 1.5 million residential construction workers left the industry after the recession.
Also, young kids and teens aren’t caring about going into a trade. There’s a lot of pressure for them to attend colleges. Many construction workers are retiring and there’s no one to fill in for them.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the USG Corporation reported in 2017 that 95% of contractors have serious problems finding skilled workers. Also in 2017, around 210,000 new construction jobs were added in the United States, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. More and more workers will be needed as the growth is continuing.
If you’re debating fields of study, try your hand at contracting. If you enjoy working with your hands, solving problems, building, working alone and with a team, this could be a great career path for you. The world will always need plumbers and electricians!
